April 2006 in Charleston

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

We had a fabulous Meetup at Kudu Coffee April 8, and then to a visit from Australia’s own Skyring, who came to Charleston for a few days en route to the Toronto Convention. We managed visits to all five of the Official BookCrossing Zones (OBCZs) in town, Folly Beach, Patriot’s Point (research for Skyring’s book), a walking tour downtown on Monday and visit to the site for the 2007 Convention Tuesday, food, beverages, fun, books… not to mention a wealth of Tim Tams and laughter. Sadly, though, Skyring left Charleston without tasting any grits. Next year, for sure. For more details, click on over to the Conventions/Meetings Forum at BookCrossing.

March 2006 Quick Update

BookCrossing got two mentions in the fabulous “Good Morning Lowcountry” column in the Charleston Post and Courier. It’s only fair. We are fans of GMLc, so turn about is fair play! Both columns mentioned antics of Skyring, an Aussie BookCrosser who will be visiting here in April 2006 on his way to the Toronto Convention. (Only if you are coming from Australia is Charleston en route to Canada. But, we’re happy to have him visit!) If you missed the articles, you can probably find them via charleston.net or GMLc’s blog for March 23 and March 28.
Also, if you were lucky enough to get to the Trident Literacy Book Sale on March 26, you were bound to run into a BookCrosser or two. Thanks to our friends at TLA for another great opportunity to find books and help a good cause at the same time.

The bookbox is moving and books by Southern authors are finding new homes in places “from off.” All books in the box were registered to BookCrossing so will be checking back home as they continue their travels.

Charleston BookCrossers Book Box

Hometown BookBox offered by the Charleston BookCrossers

We’ve been thinking up ways to help folks learn about Charleston and South Carolina, and came up with this: We offered a BookBox that we filled with books by South Carolina (and southern) authors and books about South Carolina. Those who signed on for the box will replace books they take with ones about their region or by a local author. Our goal is that by the time the box returns to us, it will be filled with books “from off” as they say here, that can hopefully be used in goodie bags etc for the 2007 Convention here in Charleston.

Our BookBox went out to GoryDetails, polliwog, FancyHorse, missgrace, mrsjones, mysterylady36, hobbit,
Kbgoffe, Bluestocking88, carlissa, Time-traveler, Lobodyke, and is headed home as of November 2006!
